The timing of FIFA World Cup 2022 could be a blessing for some teams: Cafu

Speaking at a press conference here, Cafu, who was in the city to play a charity football match, said, “It’s an advantage for some players because when the leagues stop in June, that’s when the World Cup happens.

World Cup-winning Brazilian captain Cafu on Friday said the unusual timing of the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar in the middle of the season could help some players put in good performances.

Speaking at a press conference here, Cafu, who was in the city to play a charity football match, said, “It’s an advantage for some players because when the leagues stop in June, that’s when the World Cup happens. Some players continue their training in clubs, so their form can be a big help to their particular country. Having the World Cup in November will be more attractive. When the World Cup happens in June , the players are tired. The leagues have only started for a few months, so the players are fresh and play well.”

Asked if Brazil would be too reliant on Neymar at the World Cup, Cafu said, “If you had asked me this question four years ago, I would have said yes. But now Brazil is not reliant on Neymar. There is there are many players like Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and Paqueta. These players also have the ability to win the Cup for Brazil… I hope Brazil does well and wins the Cup.”

Cafu said he was happy to play with some quality defenders like Maldini and Nesta but lamented that there are no good full backs at the moment.

Tennis ace Leander paes, cricketer and sports minister Manoj Tiwary and footballer Alvito D’Cunha were also present on the occasion.
